Hi Kate. What a lovely shot of those rays! Actually, the small bow on the right IS a segment of a rainbow. As the rays pass though precipitation in the cloud, the water droplets disperse the light like a prism. @andydruid Hi Andy, El Niño is occurring in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but its impact to New Zealand has been non-traditional (as forecast). There have actually been more easterlies than normal the last 1.5 months! The next few weeks do look to have more W/SW-erlies though, sorry.

@Slocar Looks like a mackerel sky to me, basically a thin layer of altocumulus cloud that creates a pattern that looks a little like fish scales. Usually they precede a front crossing the area, which is forecast for Auckland today (albeit a very weak front!) ^AC
